Description
Some of the rugged terrain around the Vulture Mine near Wickenburg, Arizona. Vulture Mine began in 1863 when Henry Wickenburg, a prospector from California's gold rush, discovered a quartz outcropping containing gold. The find was a bonanza and shortly thereafter a town of some 5,000 people sprang up called Vulture City to serve the enterprize. The mine became the most productive in Arizona's history yielding some $70 million in gold. Unfortunately, Mr. Wickenburg died penniless when he sold most of his share and received only a partial cash payment and a large promissory note which the buyers failed to honor. The mine operated until 1942 when it was shut down during WWII. It has recently reopened with restored buildings as a tourable ghost town. Active mining is also once again underway at the site. Social media sharing always appreciated.
